The Jawbone’s connected to the… August 11, 2011

Filed under: Health — junglewife @ 8:25 pm

When I woke up last Friday morning, I couldn’t open my mouth all the way.  I had pain on the right side of my jaw when I tried to open my mouth, and it wouldn’t open all the way. “No worries,” I thought.  This has happened before, usually when I sleep on my back with my head at an odd angle (or even in an airplane, sleeping sitting up with my neck at a weird angle.)  But before, it usually went away within a few minutes and I was able to open my mouth all the way again with no problems.  But this time, it lasted all day.  And now it is Thursday night, almost a week later, and I still can’t open my mouth all the way!  Yikes!

I’ve been able to get some medical advice, both from a doctor friend of a friend in Singapore, and from my dad and his doctor friends in Ecuador.  I’m not quite sure what to do at this point. I don’t want to rush off to Singapore to have surgery but at the same time I want to make sure that I’m doing the right thing for my health.

I would ask that you pray for me. I’m not in a great deal of pain, and honestly this isn’t affecting my day-to-day life significantly (only that I am trying to eat mostly soft foods and liquids – that rules out a surprising amount of foods! Good for the diet, right?!) But it is something that I am concerned about.  If we were in the States, I would have lots of options for medical help and treatment. Here, not so much.  So I am asking for your prayers. Prayers for wisdom in what to do, and also prayers for healing.  Thank you.

We’ll be praying for wisdom and healing, Sarah! Keep us posted! By the way, where does your dad work as a doctor in Ecuador? My brother is the surgeon at Shell.

I had this problem some years ago and it lasted several weeks. I had dental and other medical advice in abundance but all it took was time. My jaw opens on a slight s curve and can lock like yours when I sleep ‘funny’, but now I apply pressure to the lower jaw whilst opening and that usually knocks it back into place. Will pray for peace, healing and wisdom too!

Praying for you! Best diet I’ve ever been on was “The Chocolate Milk Diet” when I could only drink through a straw for about two weeks. 😦 Very boring, but I lost about 10 lb. I hope this works out without you having to leave Wamena.

My daughter had problems with this…TMJ. She ended up getting a day and night splint after seeing a Craniofacial specialist. I realize that’s not an option for you at the moment. So maybe just soft foods and Advil until it calms down? Oh, and I’ll pray. God bless!

  5. Yikes! Hope the path you should take will be clear. Those are tough decisions to make!

Oh, man! That is awful! I’ll be praying for you!

    Praying, dear Sarah!

I am praying for you Sarah, that the Lord would give you wisdom and if it is His will, heal your jaw.

Since I’m reading this late, catching up as it were, I can only add that I’ll be praying too. It’s so hard to know what to do in situations like yours! Will pray for God’s clear direction on how to deal with it, and for quick healing. I’ve been getting a LOT of medical things handled during this furlough, and am praying I won’t have any issues come up while overseas :/
